- Named "The Lauca Biosphere Reserve" in 1984, it is part of the ecosystem zones recognized internationally within the framework of the MAB Program (Man and Biosphere) of UNESCO.
- These sites serve to harmoniously promote the integration of populations and nature, in order to promote sustainable development through participatory dialogue, the exchange of knowledge, the reduction of poverty, the improvement of well-being, respect for cultural values and the ability of society to adapt to changes.
- Part of the 10 Biosphere Reserves that exist in the country, Lauca is located at more than 4,000 meters above sea level and has a total area of 137,883 hectares, it is a highly fragile and vulnerable environment.
- Its flora made up of tolares, bofedales and endemic fauna with its camelids and its varied birdlife share land with the communities of the area that form a great cultural syncretism.
- Currently it is made up of three Units managed by the National Forestry Corporation in conjunction with the local community, such as Lauca National Park, Las Vicuñas National Reserve and Salar de Surire Natural Monument.
